BDSM Emblem

Practically every organization has its own symbol, no matter what’s the nature of their work. Similarly with the Gay Pride Flag, BDSM movement (Bondage & Discipline / Dominance & Submission / Sadism & Masochism) has its own symbol, called the BDSM emblem. Idealized and created during discussions on the internet about what symbol would fit into the community’s ideals, the BDSM emblem has a different purpose than the Gay Pride Flag or the Leather Pride Flag. Instead of proudly and openly declaring itself as a BDSM symbol, the BDSM emblem should be something more discrete, subtle, recognizable only by people who know the real meaning of it.

Created to be enigmatic, the BDSM emblem holds a deep meaning for those who recognize it. Its designed was inspired by an ancient Celtic symbol called the Triskele that resembles a Yin and Yang with three parts. Each part has a hole (not a dot, as in the original Yin and Yang). All the fields in the BDSM emblem are black, and the lines are metallic, silver in general. Other variations do not refer to the actual BDSM emblem.

The three divisions of the BDSM emblem refer to the threesomes that compose the practice of BDSM: (B&D, D&S, S&M). The number three also refers to the three-way creed of the community which stands for Sane, Safe and Consensual, and the three divisions of the BDSM community: tops, bottoms and switches.

The metallic color on the BDSM emblem symbolize the chains used in the BDSM practices, while the black inside each field represent the control of the dark side of sexuality. The holes inside each part of the BDSM emblem represent the void inside every person that can only be completed by another, as BDSM cannot be done by only one person.
