Sadomasochism
Pt. 2
By Jonatas Dornelles
Anthropologist
In the complex field
of sexual behavior, it's difficult to establish
the exact boundary between the normal and the abnormal.
These are concepts likely to change temporal, special
and culturally. For the ancient Egyptians, the marriage
between siblings was a royal duty- with that, could
the purity of noble blood being kept. In ancient Greece,
homosexualism used to be well accepted and freely practiced.
The sadism is the
erotic excitement provoked by imposition of sufferance.
The expression finds origins in the name of a XVIII
century French noble, the marquis of Sade. He spent
most of his life in prison and, in sprees of freedom,
frequently would get involved in scandals. Through his
books, he would pledge more tolerance for those who,
likewise himself, possessed "funny tastes".
So far as proposing the constitution of a society of
which all would be free to practice any form of sexual
deviation that suited them most.
Sadism manifests
itself by the impulse of causing pain and humiliation.
Whereas the masochist feels pleasure in feeling pain
and being humiliated. The marques de Sade himself was
a masochist at certain occasions, although the sadist
element was dominant. Couples into sadomasochist fantasies
often trade places for the sake of sexual act.
The sadist is unable
to reach sexual arousal or orgasm without causing
sufferance to the sex partner. The main goal
is to total domination of a sex partner.
Even if managing
to fulfill a sex fancy, the sadist doesn't feel
properly stimulated to reach orgasm if not causing pain
and subjecting to humiliation a sex partner.
In contrast, there sadists of who just the act of inducing
cruelty suffices to arouse orgasms.
Paradoxically, despite
pain-laden desire, the sadist almost never hurts a partner.
Almost all sadism is a fantasy look alike, as in children's
play of cowboys and bad guys. It's not crave for punishment
that gears them up, all the way around; it's the thrill
of obtaining domination over a partner.
Sadomasochists are
regarded, in general, as individuals who couldn't conciliate
two strong tendencies in infancy, independence and protection.
Hence, unable to
satisfactorily relate unless reproducing the domination-submission
bonds, existing between parents and sons.
Watch out. The sexual
impulse of a man, who derives pleasure in flogging his
masochist partner, isn't the same impulse of a man who
rapes and kills a woman.
Even though a criminal
might have fantasies of the sadist kind, his behavior
is risky to society and ought to be suppressed.
On the other hand,
exist elements of the sadist conduct found, in variable
degree, in many people. For them, a certain degree of
sadism might be the necessary element to sexual fulfillment.
Truly, the sexual act itself entails a certain
natural aggressiveness. Biting, scratching, pinching
and holding tight make part of the human response to
sexual stimuli. As natural behaviors that don't
bear anything deviant-like and won't place society in
harms' way.
Idyllic, the vast
majority of people like to think that there should exist
equity and reciprocity in the sexual expression
of love.
Nonetheless, certain
lovers don't go by this notion and want to dominate
their sex partners. And what's the problem in
doing so if there are people who enjoy suffering?
